An Overview and History of Medical Geography

An Overview and History of Medical Geography Medical geography, sometimes called health geography, is an area of medical research that incorporates geographic techniques into the study of health around the world and the spread of diseases. In addition, medical geography studies the impact of climate and location on an individuals health as well as the distribution of health services. Medical geography is an important field because it aims to provide an understanding of health problems and improve the health of people worldwide based on the various geographic factors influencing them. History of Medical Geography Medical geography has a long history. Since the time of the Greek doctor, Hippocrates (5th-4th centuries BCE), people have studied the effect of location on one’s health. For example, early medicine studied the differences in diseases experienced by people living at high versus low elevation. It was easily understood that those at living low elevations near waterways would be more prone to malaria than those at higher elevations or in drier, less humid areas. Though the reasons for these variations were not fully understood at the time, the study of this spatial distribution of disease is the beginnings of medical geography. This field of geography did not gain prominence until the mid-1800s though when cholera gripped London. As more and more people became ill, they believed they were becoming infected by vapors escaping the ground. John Snow, a doctor in London, believed that if he could isolate the source of the toxins infecting the population they and cholera could be contained. As part of his study, Snow plotted the distribution of deaths throughout London on a map. After examining these locations, he found a cluster of unusually high deaths near a water pump on Broad Street. He then concluded that the water coming from this pump was the reason people were becoming sick and he had authorities remove the handle to the pump. Once people then stopped drinking the water, the number of cholera deaths dramatically decreased. Snow’s use of mapping to find the source of disease is the earliest and most famous example of medical geography. Since he conducted his research, however, geographic techniques have found their place in a number of other medical applications. Another example of geography aiding medicine occurred in the early 20th Century in Colorado. There, dentists noticed that children living in certain areas had fewer cavities. After plotting these locations on a map and comparing them with chemicals found in the groundwater, they concluded that the children with fewer cavities were clustered around areas that had high levels of fluoride. From there, the use of fluoride gained prominence in dentistry. Medical Geography Today Today, medical geography has a number of applications as well. Since the spatial distribution of disease is still a large matter of importance though, mapping plays a huge role in the field. Maps are created to show historic outbreaks of things like the 1918 influenza pandemic, for example, or current issues like the index of pain or Google Flu Trends across the United States. In the pain map example, factors like climate and environment can be considered to determine why high amounts of pain cluster where they do at any given time. Other studies have also been conducted to show where the highest outbreaks of certain types of disease occur. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States, for instance, uses what they call the Atlas of United States Mortality to look at a wide range of health factors across the U.S. Data ranges from the spatial distribution of people at different ages to places with the best and worst air quality. Subjects such as these are important because they have implications for the population growth of an area and the instances of health problems such as asthma and lung cancer. Local governments can then consider these factors when planning their cities and/or determining the best use of city funds. The CDC also features a website for traveler’s health. Here, people can get information about the distribution of disease in countries worldwide and learn about the different vaccines needed to travel to such places. This application of medical geography is important for reducing or even stopping the spread of the world’s diseases through travel. In addition to the United States’ CDC, the World Health Organization (WHO) also features similar health data for the world with its Global Health Atlas. Here, the public, medical professionals, researchers, and other interested persons can gather data about the distribution of the world’s diseases in an attempt to find patterns of transmission and possibly cures to some of the more deadly illnesses such as HIV/AIDS and various cancers. Obstacles in Medical Geography Although medical geography is a prominent field of study today, geographers have some obstacles to overcome when gathering data. The first problem is associated with recording a disease’s location. Since people sometimes do not always go to a doctor when ill, it can be difficult to get entirely accurate data about a disease’s location. The second problem is associated with the accurate diagnosis of disease. While the third deals with the timely reporting of a disease’s presence. Often, doctor-patient confidentiality laws can complicate the reporting of a disease. Since, data such as this needs to be as complete as possible to monitor the spread of illness effectively, the International Classification of Disease (ICD) was created to make sure that all countries use the same medical terms to classify a disease and the WHO helps monitor the global surveillance of diseases to help data get to geographers and other researchers as quickly as possible. Through the efforts of the ICD, the WHO, other organizations, and local governments, geographers are in fact able to monitor the spread of disease fairly accurately and their work, like that of Dr. John Snow’s cholera maps, is essential to reducing the spread of and understanding contagious disease. As such, medical geography has become a significant area of expertise within the discipline.

Saint Thomas Aquinas Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Saint Thomas Aquinas - Essay Example It follows a cycle-God, God's creation, Man, Man's purpose, Christ, the Sacraments, and back to God. He delves into the various concepts of divinity and explains it with logical and simple reasoning. No wonder it has often been consulted and cited in case of religious discussions and debates over the ages. Since this essay forms a part of our Theory of Rights course, let us digress a bit and try to understand the background of this essay. A 'right' can be defined as a special advantage for obtaining a liberty, a power, an entitlement, or an immunity that someone gains because of his or her particular status. The general notion of right applies in both legal and moral contexts. It was the famous English philosopher Thomas Hobbes who introduced the English term 'right' into political philosophy with his interpretation of ius naturale as 'right of nature'. As he mentions in the chapter 14 of Leviathan: The right of nature is the liberty each man has to use his own power as he will himself, for the preservation of his own nature, that is to say, of his own life, and consequently of doing anything which, in his own judgment and reason, he shall conceive to be the aptest means thereunto. John Locke and William Paley also offered their significant contributions towards the body of work of the theory of rights. John Locke also an English philosopher argues that God created people free and equal in the state of nature. Unlike Hobbes, who supported the theory of natural reason and natural law, Locke proposes the theory of natural right. He further said that as such in this condition, no one is naturally sovereign over anyone else. William Paley, a British divine, best remembered for his watchmaker analogy on the other hand says that rights are either natural or adventitious and that its distinction here rests on whether rights are created by society or not. It is in this background that we shall endeavour to comprehend St Thomas's views on law and its specific relation with reason. Coming back now to St Thomas, it is also in Summa Theologica that St Thomas talks about the various aspects of law and the role of justice in human community, his basic premise being that law essentially pertains to reason. It is much later in the Summa Theologica that Thomas turns to the problem of law. His skilful treatment of the subject throws light into the coherence of his thought and his confidence in the ability of reason to guide us in making ethical decisions. The Greek philosopher Aristotle was perhaps one of the first few great masters who portrayed and analysed the intent behind man's actions in their writing and tried to give it a lucid form through a well-structured approach. According to Aristotle, the first principle of all activity is reason. It is through reason that we reach an end to any problem or discussion. St Thomas too concurs with Aristotle in this basic premise. Let us now examine in depth St Thomas's ideas

Marketing Communication Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Marketing Communication - Research Paper Example On the other hand, marketers have also realised the benefits brought about by the use of a combined sources of communication in their marketing endeavours which is widely known as integrated marketing communication plan (IMC) and this concept has significantly gained prominence during the current period (Kotler & Armstrong, 2004 ). As such, this essay seeks to evaluate the extent to which Apple Company effectively uses an integrated marketing communication plan. Explanation of IMC In order to evaluate the extent to which Apple utilises an integrated marketing communication plan in its operations, it is imperative to begin by defining the concept in order to get a clear understanding of its meaning. An integrated marketing communication plan is described as â€Å"a concept of marketing communication planning that seeks to evaluate the strategic roles of a variety of communication disciplines such as advertising, personal selling, sales promotion, direct marketing and public relations ,† (Cant, 2000 p.285). The aim is to coordinate the messages so that they convey the same thing at the same time to the same audience. Duplessis (2005) also posits to the effect that a company integrates or coordinates the use of these communication channels in order to give a clear and consistent message that is compelling to the customers about the products offered which also reinforces the image of the organisation. Integrated marketing communication strategy by Apple According to Buch (2010), Apple has adopted an iAd platform which is a strategy that is meant to support advertising within the iPhone fraternity. This platform integrates the use of the other applications on the iPhone at the same time and the strategy is good in that it enables the company to market its products to various users who can still enjoy the benefit of the other applications at the same time. Though this strategy has been criticised by other sectors of the society, it can be seen that it is very e ffective in as far as advertising of the products offered by Apple is concerned. The idea behind this strategy is to coordinate advertising with the other applications that can be found on the iPhone with the aim of achieving the intended objectives of remaining the leader in the iPhone and tablet industry by the company. Since 2010, it can be noted that Apple has continued to enjoy high volumes of revenue from the sale of iPhones regardless of the negative impacts in the economy that prevailed. Promotion of the products offered particularly the iPhones significantly contributed to the success of the company in its endeavour to waive negative impacts that were likely to impact on its operations. For instance, the company made efforts to spell the unique features of its products and these appealed to the interests of the customers. Promotional efforts such as the decrease in price of products such as the iPod in 2010 greatly contributed to high levels of customer satisfaction (AAPL, 2012). Other companies found it difficult to imitate and Apple harnessed this strategy in its IMC strategy with the aim of appealing to the interests of the customers. Apple’s operations were significantly impacted by various public relations crises in 2008. Despite being on top in terms of innovations in technology, Apple Inc was badly criticised by

Wired verus Wireless Networks :: essays research papers

Wired VS Wireless Networks In today’s world networking is becoming a very common thing with business’s and homes. Some of the main reasons are because you can share files, printers, and other resources. The big networking way style is to use cables connecting all the equipment on a network. Today however, what has a market of its own and is competing with the wired networks is now the wireless network. Many companies have jumped into home networking now, and there is now a big selection of products on the market being wired or wireless. The wired system will provide the highest performance and would make a good choice for home offices, where its speed and low cost would outweigh any cable clutter and a more difficult installation. Wired Home Networks is the least expensive and the fastest by a long shot. It's speed is 10 megabits per second/100 megabits per second Ethernet network. All you need is a couple of plug N’ Play NIC cards, a hub, some cables, some minimal software Traditional wired networks may be the fastest way of moving data between computers, but this product's dependence on a cable (which is a bit thicker than a standard telephone wire) that can clutter and be a problem. You have to be able to string it where people won't trip over it and unless you can hide it, it will add little to your decor. Also, you need to find a location for the hub that's central to the networked PCs and has available AC power. Depending on the distance between your networked PCs, you might also need longer cables. Fortunately, Ethernet cabling is widely available. Now if you want a simple and easy to install home network, wireless is for you. With wireless there’s no need to open your PC. The antenna’s can plug into a phone jack, modem, or parallel ports on your pc’s. With most wireless kits they make sure the network setup process is easy, no matter what your level of experience. The installation software automatically sets up everything without making you deal with network setup screens. The downside to wireless is its speed is only about 1-2 megabits per second. As you can see, it's considerably slower than the 100 megabits per second wired network. Wireless is definitely not optimum for network game playing or exchanging huge files. But 1-2 megabits per second is fast enough for printer sharing and shared Internet access over a conventional modem.

Live Without TV Essay

When my family’s only television set went to the repair shop the other day, my parents, my sister, and I thought we would have a terrible week. How could we get through the long evenings in such a quiet house? What would it be like without all the shows to keep us company? We soon realized, though, that living without television for a while was a stroke of good fortune. It became easy for each of us to enjoy some activities alone, to complete some postponed chores, and to spend rewarding time with each other and friends. First of all, with no television to compete for our time, we found plenty of hours for personal interests. We all read more that week than we had read during the six months before. My father seemed to be addicted to newspapers during his free time at home. My sister and I had time to complete the book â€Å"Top 100 romance novels† that I had borrowed for three months and we had also shared our feeling together. We each also enjoyed some hobbies we had ignored for ages. My family went swimming every weekend and we found more interesting than ever before. In addition, my sister and I both stopped procrastinating with our homework. We realized that without television’s attraction, we could finish our homework faster and more effective. Second, we did chores that had been hanging over our heads for too long. There were many jobs around the house that had needed attraction for some time. The things we had to do were cleaning up our rooms, and then renewing them with paper-hangings. My father did laundry while my mother arranged the kitchen, and my sister and I took care of plants in the garden. We also had a chance to do some long-postponed shopping. Go shopping with family was my hobby and my mother had chances to buy some essential items. I bought some new English books and of course, some new short stories. And each of us also caught up with e-mail and did paperwork that was long overdue. Dad and mom finished their reports and our two sisters completed our presentations sooner than planned. Finally, and probably most important, we spent time with each other. Instead of just being in the same room together while we stared at a screen, we actually talked for many pleasant hours. My sister had an opportunity to tell about her short vacation with her friends to Nha Trang. We also shared our feelings about our daily work. Moreover, for the first time in years, my family played some games together. We reminded our memories with several games of chess with our own funny rules. And because we did not have to worry about missing this or that show, we had some family friends over on a couple of evenings and spent an enjoyable time with them. My parents had chances to chat for hours with their close friends and they found very glad. They were all proud of their children, their jobs and their happy life. Once our television returned, we were not prepared to put in the attic. But we had some sense of how it can take over our lives if we are not careful. We are not more selective. We turn on the set for our favorite shows, certain sports events, and the news, but we do not leave it running all evening. As a result, we find we can enjoy television and still have time left for other activities and interests.
