When I visited MIT my junior year, I missed my plane and was really worried the people waiting for me at the airport would just leave because they thought I wasnt coming, and d e stranded at Logan airport until my flight home (they waited, though). When I came to MIT last August, my car caught on fire on the way there and I got in a car with a stranger just so I wouldnt miss my flight. No, seriously. The lady working there told me I missed my flight because I still had to go through security and everything, but I convinced her I could run really fast. Luckily they werent far from the front, so I just stopped there. I went through security no problem, got to my gate and they were still boarding WIN. Then they asked me for my boarding pass and I realized I left it in security, along with my ID. Luckily I had my license and they printed me another boarding pass. On the plane I decided to text my dad to let him know I made it, and thats when I realized that, along with my boarding pass and ID, I left my phone in security. Hurray. So yeah. (Miraculously, I called my dad a few days later from my friends phone to tell him I lost mine, and he told me he knew already because they mailed it back to my house (along with my ID, which is presumably how they knew whose it was). My luck bo th good and bad amazes me sometimes. 3. When my dad mailed me my phone and ID, he also mailed me an apple corer and a set of utensils. I like learning about service and service organizations because Im interested in making such things more efficient and effective, and Bike and Build is a service trip as well as a bike trip in all the towns we stop in, we give presentations about the affordable housing crisis in the U.S., and we spend several days helping build houses with organizations like Habitat for Humanit y. I think the best way to evaluate how effective something like this is to do research, and then actually try it out, so it should be a very educational experience. Also, I like promoting bike use instead of cars, and I like doing crazy things, mostly for posterity (both of them). Bike and Build also raises money for said affordable housing organizations (not just Habitat, it just happens to be one of the most recognizable) by asking each of its riders to raise $4000. So this is me exploiting my position as a blogger to ask each one of you for a donation of whatever youre willing to give even if its only $5 or $10. It makes a difference, and it makes me like you a lot. =) 9. Another Dont Let This Happen To You type thing bad hass classes. Mine is over, thank every natural and supernatural being, and I hope none of you ever have to suffer through an experience like this. It wasnt hard, just very badly organized. At the end of every term, youll get to fill out an anonymous class evaluation so the powers-that-be know how much people love it or what they should improve. To be fair, its a fairly new class. Im not sure that justifies how much I actually paid for it considering the tuition here, but at least its over. As one of the students in the class said when the professors left the room for the last time, this moment [filling out the evaluation] is the very reason we are justified in not having dropped the class, like the other half of the class did.For this reason, Im not going to tell you what class it was, because optimistically, it will be significantly better next year, considering they have pages of student suggestions to use. But really, ask peo ple you know what they know about certain classes before you sign up for them, no matter how cool they sound. Itll save you a lot of trouble. 10. Senior House had its annual water drop last week. We drop containers filled with water from the balcony to (and I quote the email sent out about it) shout out the evil classes what you are glad you are done with, so they can be written on the gravitational sacrifices. I didnt participate because I was still writing a paper for said Terrible Hass Class, but it sounds, umwet. 11. Eleven things because Im course 11 and class of 2011. I still have a lot to say so Ill probably write another post soon, but I think this is enough to digest for now. Last week I went to the Student Leader Awards. Normally these things are really boring and I dont go, but Amnesty was getting an award, so I thought I should. It was surprisingly unboring they had MTG sing random songs throughout the ceremony, ending with the song No Time At All from a previous production (Pippin) sung to Dean Benedict, our fairly popular dean for student life, to commemorate his retirement. They put a veil and shawl on him, and he even sang along. It was ridiculous and amusing, and the food was good, so Im glad I went. Unfortunately I didnt take pictures, but Im sure theyll pop up on teh internets sometime soon and when they do Ill let you know. Amnesty won the philanthropy award, by the way. Woohoo. Morality in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn - Free Essay Example

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was written by Mark Twain in 1884. Twains book tackles many societal issues including slavery, racism, and morality. Throughout the book, Twain shows Huck in positions where he has to make moral choices between what he believes in and what society thinks is right. His stance on these topics is fairly clear, however his subtle nudges towards morality with Huck is what makes the moral of this novel so pure. Twains portrayal of the characters myriad of moral issues demonstrates the theme of morality in the novel. During the first chapters of the novel Twain shows Huck making many poor judgment calls and poor moral choices. There was a myriad of instances when Huck had to face inner moral battles. Twain show that Huck has to choose between what he believes in and what is fit for society, however as the book goes on to about chapter 4, Huck makes a stand to stop an instance where he may have to lie. Huck talks to the judge and asks: Please take it, says I, and dont ask me nothing- then I wont have to lie (Hawthorne 18). Here Huck tells the judge to take his money. He asks him not to ask questions about why and to just take it so that when asked about it he would not have to lie. This shows the moral change Huck starts to possess as this story progresses. Twain also shows an exponential growth with Huck when he and Jim run off together. Twain shows the connection that the two grow toward each other. When they find a dead man on a boat than Jim covers the body in order to hide the horrifying sight from Huck. Huck, in turn, starts to feel compassion for Jim and slaves near the end of the book. Huck tries to protect and hide Jim as much as possible, but still has the feeling that he should turn him in. When thinking about Miss Watson, Huck thinks that he did the wrong, even evil, thing by not turning Jim in. Conscience says to me, What had poor Miss Watson done to you that you could see her nigger go off right under your eyes and never say one single word? What did that poor old woman do to you that you could treat her so mean. (Twain 91). Here Twain shows that Huck asks himself why he took Jim from Miss Watson. He wonders what she ever did to him. He begins to think that taking Jim was hurting Miss Watson in a very bad way. With this he still decides to keep helping Jim and decides not to turn him in. This shows that turning Jim in is what society would have wanted but not I how twain shows Hucks moral growth in the story. We see another example of moral choices when Huck and Tom help Jim escape. While they could have just let Jim out and helped him escape, they decided that they needed to make him work for his escape. They wanted to make the escape adventurous like in Toms books. In the book Tom says: It dont make no difference how foolish it is, its the right way and its the regular way. And there aint no other way, that ever I heard of, and Ive read all the books that gives any information about these things. (Twain 245). Huck was very hesitant about this idea but decided to go along with it because Tom said it would be fun and that it was the only thing to do. They make Jim do many crazy and even cruel things. They want Jim to write a journal on an old tee-shirt using blood as ink. They even think of ways to smuggle in nails, so he could cut himself to write with the blood. They even want Jim to carve inscriptions into the walls of the shed with a nail, which is worse for two reasons: Jim cannot read or write, and it would take him years to finish. To make matters worse Tom Sawyer knew the whole time that Jim was thactually free. Huckleberry Finn was a very fun and adventurous book filled with many instances of moral questioning. Huck showed growth in this area and also in his personal connections with people around him. His adventures with Jim were at times fun, sad, and scary all the same time. Even though society wanted Huck to think a certain way. Huck stuck to what he thought was right and what he felt was the best thing to do. Twains writing and telling of the story is like nothing Ive ever read before and I would definitely read this again.

Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC)

The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) was an organization established during the Civil Rights Movement. Established in April 1960 at Shaw University, SNCC organizers worked throughout the South planning sit-ins, voter registration drives and protests. The organization was no longer in operation by the 1970s as the Black Power Movement became popular. As a former SNCC member argues: In a time when the civil rights struggle is presented as a bedtime story with a beginning, middle, and end, it is important to revisit the work of SNCC and their call for transforming American democracy. Establishment of SNCC In 1960, Ella Baker, an established civil rights activist and an official with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), organized African American college students who had been involved in the 1960 sit-ins to a meeting at Shaw University. In opposition to Martin Luther King Jr., who wanted the students to work with the SCLC, Baker encouraged the attendees to create an independent organization. James Lawson, a theology student at Vanderbilt University, wrote a mission statement we affirm the philosophical or religious ideals of nonviolence as the foundation of our purpose, the presupposition of our faith, and the manner of our action. Nonviolence, growing from Judaic-Christian traditions, seeks a social order of justice permeated by love. That same year, Marion Barry was elected as SNCCs first chairman. Freedom Rides By 1961, SNCC was gaining prominence as a civil rights organization. That year, the group galvanized students and civil rights activists to participate in the Freedom Rides to investigate how effectively the Interstate Commerce Commission was enforcing the Supreme Court ruling of equal treatment in interstate travel. By November of 1961, SNCC was organizing voter registration drives in Mississippi. SNCC also organized desegregation campaigns in Albany, Ga. known as the Albany Movement. March on Washington In August of 1963, SNCC was one of the chief organizers of the March on Washington along with Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), the SCLC and the NAACP. John Lewis, chairman of SNCC was scheduled to speak but his criticism of the proposed civil rights bill caused other organizers to pressure Lewis to change the tone of his speech. Lewis and SNCC led listeners in a chant, to We want our freedom, and we want it now. Freedom Summer The following summer, SNCC worked with CORE as well as other civil rights organizations to register Mississippi voters. That same year, SNCC members helped establish the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party to create diversity in the states Democratic Party. The work of SNCC and the MFDP caused the National Democratic Party to mandate that all states have equality in its delegation by the 1968 election. Local Organizations From initiatives such as Freedom Summer, voter registration, and other initiatives, local African American communities began creating organizations to meet the needs of their community. For instance, in Selma, African Americans state the Lowndes County Freedom Organization. Later Years and Legacy By the late 1960s, SNCC changed its name to the Student National Coordinating Committee to reflect its changing philosophy. Several members, particularly James Forman believed that nonviolence might not be the only strategy to overcoming racism. Forman once admitted that he did not know how much longer we can stay nonviolent. Under the leadership of Stokely Carmicheal, SNCC began protesting against the Vietnam War and became aligned with the  Black Power Movement. By the 1970s, SNCC was no longer an active organization   Former SNCC member Julian Bond has said, a  final SNCC legacy is the destruction of the psychological shackles which had kept black southerners in physical and mental peonage; SNCC helped break those chains forever. Impact of recruitments and selection on organisations in attracting and retaining employees As stated by Barndao et al. (2017), electronic systems of recruitment and selection process generate the huge quantity of applications and this process enforces that more educated and technology savvy candidates must be recruited. Web-based systems of recruitment also make simply the process of recruitment for the organisations. HR department of the organisation faces a critical issue in determining if the existent employees have skills to meet performance targets. In order to remain economically competitive, HR department must focus on values and skills of the employees. As opined by Ahammad et al. (2016), employers face difficulty in managing their workforce as young employees need more career enhancement. HR department should focus on recruiting skilled employees that must match organisational requirements. Recruiting qualified employees will be helpful for an organisation to meet the goals, however, the organisation needs to attain job fairs, seminars, portal-based recruitments a nd campus recruitment. Among the employees, the intellectual relationship should be increased and employers try to make long-term relationships with the skilled employees. Through the online process of recruitment, employers get a huge advantage to attract more skilled and proficient employees. Employees also get to know about vacancy through the external recruitment process. Higher salary, motivation and career growth attract the employees to work in the organisation. Attracting more employees will be possible if the organisation has less bureaucratic structure and gap between employees and leaders is less. On the other side, in some of the small business, HR department attracts more skilled employees with higher wages as the job roles in these organisations are diverse (Carpenter Charon, 2014). Attracting of employees will be possible if the organisation flexible in work-life balance, shift timing and work-from-home facility. The first step to join in the organisation is the job roles and salary. Retention rates are described as the collective result of the individual decision in the organisation (Fruhen, Weis Fin, 2015). Employees are more likely to stay in the organisation where they feel valued. The selection process of the organisation should be fair and it should provide advantages to all irrespective of race, religion, creed, sex and ethnic background. However, in most of the organisations, the turnover rate is high due to mainly employees workload is higher than the salary; moreover, job roles do not match the employee's expectations. If the employees do not find the opportunity and career development, employees leave the workplace. In addition, stressful workplace and bad leaders are the reasons behind the high turnover. In this scenario, HR department should be transparent in work process and employees' friendly workplace can lead to the more retention. As described in Herzberg's two factory theory, there are certain elements that play as motivators in the workplace like challenging work, responsibility, recognition, involvement in the decision-making process (Shaffer, Bakhshi Kim, 2015). Moreover, HR department must ensure while recruiting that employees are going to get a salary at the proper time as well as job security, fringe benefits, paid insurance, less confinement and good pay are important in retention. In addition, organisations in recent time, trying to tap in-house talent through motivation as these employees are extremely valuable. According to Armstrong Taylor (2014), organisations have started employee referral with ethical practices that will enable to recruit employees from various backgrounds. Through recruitment and selection, it is needed to improve access to information that supports an ability to retain more employees. Conclusions It is observed that most of the organisations use both external and internal types of recruitment in order to generate the maximum pool of skilled employees. Selection process needs to be fair and it should follow ethics that would lead to generate better perception about the organisation among employees. Giving equal chances to all and not being discriminatory would help the organisation to attract and retain maximum skilled employees. HR department has its role to recognise the candidates better and analyse them correctly. Organisations need to provide opportunities to grow and advancement in career growth that would be beneficial for the employees to join the organisation. It can be deduced that the organisations should be opened in exploring the way of retention and attracting the employees aside relying more on selection recruitment as the factors cannot determine the longevity of employees. It is needed that organisations can critically examine the factors of selection and recr uitment with more fair policies that must lead to retain and attract more skilled employees.
